Officially released FreeBSD 7.3-RELEASE

After 10 months from the issuance of FreeBSD 7.2 and 4 months after the release of FreeBSD 8.0 saw the release of FreeBSD 7.3. Issue architectures available for amd64, i386, pc98, and sparc64 4 mounting assemblies: bootonly, CD, DVD and LiveFS. In the future, the branch FreeBSD 7.x released another release (7.4), but the focus of developers focused on the development branch 8.x;

Major improvements:

* Implementation of the ZFS file system has been updated to version 13, which implies a readiness for commercial operation in the branch of FreeBSD 7. The list of improvements in ZFSv13 can be found here, as examples here;
* Added a new boot gptzfsboot, supports GPT and ZFS;
* Added driver hwpmc (4) with the support of technology hwpmc (Performance Counter) for processors Core2/i7, which allows use to identify bottlenecks, debugging and profiling special “PERFMON” registers CPU);
* The kit includes new tools and mfiutil mptutil for managing RAID-controllers that are running and the mfi driver mpt;
* Added protection against exploitation of vulnerabilities associated with the NULL-pointer dereference. To control uses a new sysctl-variable security.bsd.map_at_zero, which is installed by default to 1, which implies the prohibition mapinga memory blocks in the zero address;
* Updated applications in the ports and base system, for example: bind 9.4-ESV, sendmail 8.14.4, Gnome 2.28.2 (x11/gnome2), KDE 4.3.5 (x11/kde4), Xorg 7.5, Perl 5.10;
* Added a new driver amdsbwd to work with the watchdog-timer AMD SB600/SB7xx;
* For graphics cards based on GPU Radeon HD 4200 (RS880), 4770 (RV740), R6/7xx 3D and Intel G41 kit is included in the DRM-module (Direct Rendering Manager);
* Added driver alc (4) for the Ethernet-controller Atheros AR8131/AR8132;
