Recently, as a result of discussions in the list of Linux-kernel developers, it was decided that the Linux-kernel released since January 2008 will not work with kernel modules, which are distributed under licenses that are incompatible with the GPL, and until 2008, when trying to load these unfree modules will be issued a warning message.
It was planned that this action will force the developers closed drivers make the basic functionality in the form of driver user process (userspace), leaving a kernel module only minimal code.
However, due to the continuation of this discussion it was decided not to go to such measures.
