United States Postal Service (USPS) has transferred 1,300 of its servers, which operates its own system for tracking parcels, daily processing of more than 40 million transactions, the use of Linux.
The process of changing the operating system took more than one year. The main problem was porting to the Linux source code tracking system that was written in Cobol. In the end, it turned out cheaper than rewrite it completely.
Migration is part of a broader plan for the standardization of software based on open source. The main purpose of migration is - reducing transaction costs and increase the number of transactions that can handle the system.
USPS does not want to discuss the exact details of the savings when migrating from Sun Solaris to HP and SUSE Linux, but apparently substantial. Past software upgrades USPS delivery service was held 15 years ago.
