Executive Director of Red Hat, Jim Whitehurst today by c presentation at the conference Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) in San Francisco. In his words, Linux has achieved very impressive gains in the server market, but the end-users in their bulk and have not benefited from the open operating system, preferring it closed and more expensive counterparts.

Whitehurst said that he, as head of the company should think about the economic feasibility of certain actions Red Hat. Based on this logic, the development of commercial desktop versions of Linux would cost to minimize.

“First, I do not know how you can make money. Units of the people use desktop PCs to mission-critical, so they do not need Linux,” - says CEO Red Hat.

Whitehurst said that his company makes a profit on desktop distributions, but little of that money. “We have a desktop version of the OS, but in most cases it is in demand from big customers, who primarily buy server licenses. Licenses for desktops take a makeweight,” - says Whitehurst.
