Cuba has developed an official state Linux-distribution Nova

Officially, the distribution was presented at the technical conference in Havana. Speakers, which showed operating system, say that Nova has everything necessary for the operation of state systems and on Microsoft’s software will now be abandoned.

Recall that most of the computers in Cuba run under Windows, but the position of the operating system on the Isle of freedom is somewhat mixed. According to Hector Rodriguez, dean of the School of the free software at the University of Cuba, today approximately 20% of new computers sold come with the operating system Linux. In the public sector the figure is much higher.

Rodriguez said that along with the Nova will be supplied a set of programs created as a global community of developers open software, and Cuban programmers.

“Several government agencies have already been translated into the established system of Nova, however, to note that the novelty is not always welcome, as well as fear for compatible formats in which data is stored. I hope that over the next 5 years half of the Cuban computers will be migrated to Linux” - he said.
