Protect Linux from Microsoft and other pursuers

Software Freedom Law Center, Linux Foundation and the Open Invention Network announced an initiative Advocates for Linux “, aimed at reducing threats to the development of patent-free operating system and the movement of the ACT as a whole. Linux developers have previously been subjected to accusations from Microsoft in violation of its many patents.

The new initiative offers an alternative to the various attempts to create “patent portfolio” that have been made previously. Recall, as a result of one such attempt corporations IBM, Sony, Philips, Red Hat and Novell to pool their patents to protect Linux and implement the joint management of common interest born Association Open Invention Network (OIN). Despite the fact that the joint management of patents provides some cost savings, process of working on obtaining patents for such a large field of technology, which is even one kernel of Linux, can hardly be called cheap.

Against this background, proposed under a new initiative method of “defensive publication”, according to some experts, potentially lower cost, because it does not require the filing of a patent. In addition, the new initiative can be called more closely related to the movement of the ACT, as well as joint participation in it are encouraged to attend.

It is assumed that users will be able to contribute, a detailed description of the innovation on a special Web site, using a number of examples and the accompanying manual. This description will be formalized by lawyers OIN and included in a public database IP.com Prior Art Database.
