Public authorities Malaysia saved over $ 8 million through the introduction of free software

The conference MyGOSSCON 2008, held November 5-6 in Putrajaya (Malaysia), Chief Secretary Government of Malaysia Mohd Sidek (Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan) said that the introduction of free software in government of Malaysia has already resulted in savings of about $ 9 million.

The first phase of implementation of free software in 15 state agencies has resulted in savings of 3 million dollars. At the second stage in the introduction of an institutional application OpenOffice.org on the 10 682 jobs of civil servants were saved another 6 million dollars.

In addition to the institutional application OpenOffice.org has been introduced 174 items of free software applications.

According to the Chief Secretary to the Government of Malaysia, the increased use of free software improves the quality of information services and the development of local ICT market. These factors have a positive impact on the country’s GDP and the rate of economic development, given the government policy to reduce IT costs of public bodies.
