Former chief of IT-department of the Foreign Ministry of Germany, and now an ordinary diplomat Rolf Schuster made a sensational statement at the conference held in Malaga OSWC.
Schuster notes that the service computer with free software costs the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about 2000 euros per year cheaper than the maintenance of proprietary systems. (in the first case about 1000 euros per year, in the second, respectively, over 3000).
Currently 4000 computers (of 11000) of the Ministry is running GNU / Linux. Thus, almost half of the 230 German consulates and embassies have been translated into free software. The transition should be completed by the middle of next year.
Shuster also not forget to mention the difficulties encountered in the transition to the ACT. In particular, the embassy in Japan have a problem with fonts in OpenOffice. A little harder to overcome the resistance of the 200 employees of IT-department, many of whom have not heard anything about Linux. Rebels, however, were sent on courses where they quickly recognized the advantages of the ACT.
