Chapter Linux Foundation predicted oblivion Solaris

According to Jim Zemlin (Jim Zemlin), head of the organization Linux Foundation, in the future to stay afloat only for the Linux and Windows, and Solaris, as well as other Unix-system, is doomed to oblivion. According to him Solaris is too dependent on remaining in the system of outdated technologies, and new items such as ZFS and DTrace does not have a noticeable influence on the choice of platform. Jim Zemlin criticized Sun for compulsory binding to its platform and its associated open source projects, in particular for use for the development of such ZFS and DTrace to CDDL, is incompatible with the GPL.

The article also cites several examples of recent migration of companies from Solaris to Linux, the cause of which is mainly the high cost of support solutions based on Solaris. For example, Sesame Workshop migrated to Linux saved 20 thousand dollars a year in maintenance costs. According to research firm IDC, the number of sales of Linux servers grew from 2.4 million in 2006 to 2.7 million in 2007, while sales of servers with Solaris fell from 376 thousand in 2006 to 371 thousand in 2007.

Representatives of Sun Microsystems by contrast, argue that the increased popularity of Solaris increases and the possibility of improving on the eyes. So OpenSolaris developer community has reached a mark of 160 thousand participants, while the number of employees Sun is 34 thousand. On the other hand, it is unclear whether open source projects that have arisen around OpenSolaris, exist without the firm support of Sun Microsystems, in case the company will lose interest in open technologies will be purchased or scalps competitor.
