Founder of the KDE project awarded the highest state award in Germany

6 November in the Berlin Senate, the founder of the desktop environment KDE Ettrihu Matthias (Matthias Ettrich), was awarded Germany's highest order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Order is awarded in recognition of the contribution of Matthias in the free software movement, innovation and dissemination of knowledge for the common good. " The awards are granted the Secretary of State Almut Nehring-Venus (Almuth Nehring-Venus).

The KDE project was born October 14, 1996. The project grew and spread, causing as a result of one of the most active and bringing new ideas of the free software community and helped to re-understand, what do users expect from this software. Indirectly KDE community has influenced the development of ecosystems of Free Software in general, shifting the focus from a Unix server on a Unix system as a powerful custom desktop, whose borders are moved apart to this day.
