Linux Foundation has published statistics on the development of Linux code

Non-Profit Foundation Linux Foundation today presented the statistical figures in the development of an OS kernel, as well as developers who make the greatest contribution to the development of the heart open OS. The report notes that in 2006 a major developer and contributor of code to the kernel was the largest Linux-vendor Red Hat, which accounted for 14.4% of all annual changes to the kernel, but in 2007 the share of past Red Hat declined to 11,2%.

At the same time, the main competitor, Red Hat Novell immediately by 3,6% and increased its share, according to the end of 2007, 8,9% of the code was written by programmers hands of this company. In addition, the Linux Foundation said that Novell and this year is likely to continue to increase its share, so the company has all chances to overtake Red Hat in a race to intelligence. ”

In the most Novell said that the volume of open source software development for the year in the company at 250%, but this is a direct result of 200% growth sales of Linux-distribution company.

However, the Linux Foundation notes that neither Red Hat, or Novell are not the main kernel developers. Like 10 years ago, the bulk of the code (13,9%) are created by volunteer programmers around the world. In addition, it is interesting to note that the establishment of the nucleus of today remains the most large-scale geographically-distributed development project.

Some statistics: total to date to develop OS kernel employed slightly more than 1 000 programmers working in more than 100 companies since 2005, the actual number of code developers have tripled, from 70 to 95% of the developers receiving material compensation for their work.

On average, the core is added to 3 621 line of code every 3 days, and the new kernel version comes out approximately every 2.7 months. Each year thereafter the rate of kernel development and introduction of new capacity is growing by an average of 10%.

Linux Foundation also notes that Linux continues to maintain its independence from large corporations, as most of the package is delivered either by individual programmers, or developers of small, independent companies that are not associated with global IT giants.

Over the past 3 years and 10 of the leading developers of code contributed about 15% taken in the nucleus changes, TOP-30 programmers are responsible for exactly 30% of the code.
