Police France completely converted to Linux

French police announced the refusal of their offices throughout the country from the use of Microsoft Windows operating systems in favor of open distributions of Linux. The police say that their migration to Linux will be one of the largest in the world.

The first to move to Linux back in 2005 began to separate divisions of the French gendarmerie, along with the transition to Linux it was held and pervasive shift in the open office suite OpenOffice. The Gendarmerie has previously been used 70 000 computers running Windows XP, but now the OS can be replaced by Ubuntu Linux, said in an interview with Agence France Press Director of the IT department of the French police, Colonel Nicolas Gerard.

“We will introduce Linux at every computer in all police stations within France. It is expected that this year will be moved to Ubuntu from 5 to 8 thousand desktops in the next 4 years will be transferred to 12-15 thousands of computers every year. Thus, full transition will be completed by the 2013-2014 year, “- said Gerard.

According to official representatives of the French police, the main reasons that prompted the agency to move to an open operating system, are three: first, the police wants to diversify the composition of the IT suppliers and reduce the dependence of local structure of a corporation, and secondly, the French found it less demanding Linux to computing resources and more promising, finally, thirdly, the price factor, as well as Linux distributions, for the most cost when purchasing 2-3 times cheaper than commercial systems.

In addition, the police recalled that earlier in the units was made a full transition to an open server software and introduced free e-mail clients, as well as open web browsers. This step, according to Gerard, only this software will allow police officers to save about 7 million euros annually.

“In 2004 we had to buy 13 000 new licenses for office software, this year will buy only 27 licenses for all government departments”, - said Gerard. Also in France are going to buy a ready-made hardware with preinstalled Linux.

Today, the French police are more than 100 000 administrative employees, so the full transition to Linux will be the largest in France and one of the largest in the world.
