In his message to Jim Zemlin on 8 January this year, Linus Torvalds said that he has no intention to transfer the core of an open OS on a new version of the open license GPL3.
“GPL3 meets the objectives of Free Software Foundation, at the same time GPL2 much closer to me on the principles and best suited development model Linux. Therefore, the Linux kernel used to be on the GPL2 and while it will remain,” - said Torvalds. In addition, he writes that not all developers have the third version of the license and there are lots of open source software on GPL2, so there should be the choice of the creators of the license.
Linus noted that the core will remain on the second version of the GPL so long until all the developers who have invested their efforts in the project will not give its consent to the transfer of their code to GPL3.
