Torvalds predicts Linux-flowering smartphones in 2008

Linus Torvalds, the creator of the kernel for modern operating systems Linux, gives interview to Reuters. In the interview discusses the prospects for mobile Linux-platform in the very near future. As the main obstacles to the spread of Linux in the smartphone market, Torvalds called not brutal competition from Symbian, and even more, Windows Mobile. The main reason for the godfather of Linux-world finds itself low market share of smartphones, as compared with conventional telephones. Smartphones are still an expensive technology that need them, people simply can not afford. Now, when much cheaper smartphones, Linux will be able to show off these devices, because if a simple Linux-phone platforms to compete with proprietary counterparts, some of its smartphones benefits can be fully utilized. In addition, the emergence of the first open (in fact, one of this) Linux-platform Android from Google will help make smart phones more cheaply. Thus, in 2008, Torvalds predicts a strong increase in market share of smartphones, as well as increased prevalence of these Linux-platform.
