Overview, installation and first steps in programming, Linux on the Sony PLAYSTATION 3

PLAYSTATION 3 - game console unusual for two reasons. First, it is remarkably open, far more than any previous consoles. While most of the consoles are doing everything possible to prevent unwarranted games to run on their system, PS3 is in a different direction, even providing direct support for installation and download other people’s operating systems. Of course, many game functions, such as video acceleration, for third-party operating systems are blocked, but this series is mainly devoted to more general and scientific applications.

PS3 is a real treasure CPU Cell Broadband Engine (which is often referred to simply as Cell BE). Cell BE architecture is radically different from the traditional design of processors. On the Cell BE chip are nine processing elements (note that the PS3 one does not work, and another is reserved for system usage, so that at your disposal are seven manufacturing units). The main processing element - it is quite an ordinary general purpose processor. This is a double-processor architecture, Power Architecture ™, called the Power Processing Element, or briefly PPE. However, the remaining eight elements - is another story.
