Russia found a replacement for Microsoft

Ministry of Communications is developing its own version of the software for school computers. The end of 2007 in Russia will begin an experiment to introduce free software based on open source. If the experiment is successful, schools will continue to choose what software to use - or free license.

“Today, work is underway on the development of Russia’s software open source,” - said Tuesday the ministry’s head Leonid Reiman, the report to Vladimir Putin to provide telephone and Internet services.

In parallel, the Government intends to introduce software products with open source-based system Linux. Free software will be adapted for school needs.

Creating software based on open source is the development of distribution, which can then be installed on school computers. “This is an ordinary engineering work is not much of a difficulty,” - the experts say. “By value, this should not be expensive, but because it is a public project, the price may not be a market”, - notes independent analyst of the computer market Andrey Annenkov.
