NASA is testing a system of control of the spacecraft based on Linux

Agency NASA chose Linux as the primary OS for the pilot project “Dependable Multiprocessor” developed in the mission “New Millennium Program Space Technology 8 (ST8)”.

The project will create the programming environment is already familiar to scientists, allowing them to easily port scientific applications, which can be used to control the equipment and the calculations directly on the spacecraft.
